Crane hire costs demystified – 2026

rigger operating crane

When it comes to moving heavy equipment, lifting steel structures, or working on construction projects at height, cranes are essential. But buying a crane isn’t always practical or affordable. That’s why crane hire has become the go-to solution for many contractors and businesses across South Africa.

Renting gives you access to the right crane for each job — whether it’s for a single day, a week, or a few months without the massive cost of buying one outright.

We will help you with the following in this guide

  • What crane hire costs
  • What affects the price
  • The benefits of renting instead of buying

How much does it cost to hire a crane in South Africa?

Crane hire prices can vary depending on the type and size of crane you need, where the job is located, and how long you’ll need it for.

Price guidance for crane truck hire

Pricing depends on capacity, operator, travel, rigging gear and duration.

For small truck-mounted cranes (2–8 t) local hourly rates can be low, but typical truck crane day rates for common 8–25 t units often start modestly, while larger mobile cranes (20–80 t) cost significantly more.

Hire prices on daily and weekly packages are likely to have a lower per-hour cost. Operator, fuel and insurance all add to the cost. if for example your lift requires more than one rigger on site, this will cost more. If the distance from our yard to your site is more than about 25km, there is likely to be an establishment cost to get the trucks to site. What often happens is we calculate the rate from the time the truck leaves the yard to simplify matters.

Crane selection criteria

Start with weight + radius: specify object weight and how close the crane can get to the lift (radius). This almost always determines required crane tonnage. Never guess! If a crane is sent to site and it is not suitable you will still be responsible for the cost. You may also incur the cost of a crane that is over-kill and more expensive. It is always best to have all of the information readily available and if necessary get a rigger to site to assess the job. We most often do not charge to get a rigger to site.

Match industry needs: mining sites often require heavy-capacity mobile/crawler along with permits, SHEQ, PPE, safety file, crane and operator licenses and often other requirements.

Compare mobilization and rigging costs: these often add significantly to the baseline hire rate.

Include the weight (kg/tonne) and approximate reach or height you need in your enquiry, this will speed up accurate quotes and reduce surprises on site. If you have pictures or video of the site, send that information.

General crane hire price guide

But keep in mind the rental fee isn’t the only cost involved.

Additional costs to consider

Transport and delivery – Many cranes, especially crawler and tower cranes, need to be delivered to your site.

Assembly and dismantling – Some cranes need to be set up or taken apart on-site, which involves extra labour.

Permits – Depending on your location and project, you may need local permits to operate the crane, especially on public roads or near power lines.

Operators and riggers – Cranes must be operated by trained and certified professionals, and you might need riggers and signalers too.

Project preparation – You may need to disconnect overhead utility lines, prepare lifting plans, or account for overtime rates.

What affects crane hire prices?

Understanding what goes into the cost will help you choose the best option for your project and avoid unexpected expenses.

Key factors include

Type of crane

Smaller cranes like carry deck cranes or small mobile cranes and crane trucks are cheaper.

Larger hydraulic cranes are more due to their size, capacity, and complexity.

Lifting capacity

The heavier the load, the more powerful (and expensive) the crane.

High-capacity cranes can lift over 1,000 tons and come at a premium.

Rental duration

Short-term hires (daily) might cost more per day than longer hires.

Weekly or monthly rates are often more economical if you’ll need the crane for an extended period.

Location

Crane hire prices vary between provinces. In South Africa there are certain high risk areas which would cost more due to the security requirement and in some instances crane companies will not venture into high risk areas.

Jobs in remote or rural areas may cost more due to transport or availability of machines.

Market demand

In busy construction seasons, like summer, demand for cranes increases — and so do prices.

Why renting a crane often makes more sense than buying

Buying a crane is a huge investment — one that might not make financial sense for many small to medium contractors. Here’s why renting is often the smarter choice:

Lower upfront costs

Buying a crane can cost anywhere from a few hundred thousand rand to several million.

Renting lets you access top-quality equipment without spending that capital upfront.

No storage or transport worries

Owning a crane means you need space to store it and equipment to move it between sites.

With hire, the rental company usually handles delivery and collection.

No maintenance costs

Cranes require regular servicing, inspections, and sometimes repairs.

When you rent, the hire company is responsible for keeping the machine in working condition.

Use the Right Crane for Every Job

Each project might need a different type of crane.

Renting gives you the flexibility to choose exactly what you need, whether it’s a mobile crane for a one-day lift or a tower crane for months on a construction site.

Like vehicles, cranes lose value over time.

Renting means you avoid the cost of depreciation entirely.

Hiring Through a Local Crane Company like Cranehire.co.za

In South Africa, you can rent cranes through Local crane hire companies, who offer competitive pricing and quick turnaround times.

Using an online platform can be convenient for comparing options quickly. However, working directly with a local supplier Like Crane Hire SA often gives you better service, especially if the job requires site assessments or specialised advice.

Managed Crane Hire, Operator Included

Many rental companies also offer “operated hire”, which means the crane comes with a qualified operator. This is ideal if:

  • You don’t have certified staff on-site
  • Your team isn’t experienced with crane operations
  • You want to save time and avoid compliance issues
  • Operated crane hire is available on an hourly, daily, weekly or monthly basis.

Renting a crane in South Africa is a practical, cost-effective way to complete your heavy lifting projects without the stress and expense of ownership. With flexible rental terms, expert support, and a wide range of equipment available, crane hire gives you access to the right tools exactly when you need them.

Whether you’re lifting roof trusses in Johannesburg, installing tanks in Durban, or setting up infrastructure in Cape Town, there’s a rental option that suits your budget and your schedule.

Crane Hire common questions answered

How much does crane hire cost in South Africa?

Crane hire costs in South Africa depend on the type of crane, lifting capacity, project duration, and site location. Smaller crane trucks and mobile cranes are generally more affordable for short-term lifting jobs, while larger cranes used for mining, infrastructure, and heavy industrial work cost significantly more due to transport, setup, and operational requirements. Daily, weekly, and monthly rates are commonly available, and longer hires usually reduce the effective daily cost. Additional charges may include transport, operators, rigging crews, permits, fuel, and overtime. See above for estimated costs on the different types of crane trucks and mobile cranes for hire.

Is crane hire charged hourly, daily, or weekly?
Most crane hire companies offer hourly, daily, weekly, and long-term rental rates. However, crane hire often includes minimum booking periods because mobilization, setup, and travel time are major operational costs. Short lifts may still be billed as a half-day or full-day hire. Long-term projects generally benefit from discounted rates and lower per-day operating costs. Many heavy cranes also include establishment costs for transport and setup.
What factors affect crane hire prices the most?

The main factors affecting crane hire pricing are:

  • The weight of the load
  • The lifting height required
  • The radius or reach of the crane
  • Site accessibility and ground conditions
  • The crane size and type needed
  • Travel distance to site (refrerred to as ite establishment)

Many clients underestimate how much lifting radius impacts crane selection and cost. A lift that appears simple may require a significantly larger crane if the crane cannot get close to the load. Weather, permits, and specialized rigging requirements can also increase costs.

What information do I need before requesting a crane hire quote?

To receive an accurate crane hire quotation, you should provide:

  • The weight of the item being lifted
  • The required lifting height
  • The distance between the crane and the load
  • Site access details
  • Photos or videos of the lifting area
  • Information about obstacles such as power lines, buildings, or soft ground

Providing detailed information helps crane companies recommend the correct crane size and prevents delays, safety issues, or unnecessary costs caused by sending the wrong equipment to site.

Why are truck-mounted cranes becoming more popular?

Truck-mounted cranes are becoming increasingly popular because they combine lifting power with fast mobility. Unlike some larger crane setups that require escort vehicles or extensive assembly, many modern truck-mounted cranes can travel directly on public roads and begin work quickly once on site. This reduces transport delays, setup costs, and downtime. They are widely used in construction, mining, logistics, plant relocation, steel erection, and infrastructure projects where fast deployment is essential.

Technology in the crane and trucking industry is constantly striving to improve lifting capacities and truck versatility to lower costs. Road ready heavy lift truck mounted cranes can now lift as much as 100 tons at 4.6m mounted on a truck that can be easily mobilised in minutes, does not require transport to site and does not require any special permits. This is a very important factor in heavy lifting in South Africa.
